NEWS - Jason Phats' new single 'Can't Stop' features Røde NT2 and Universal Audio UAD processing

London, UK (June 25th, 2008)

Since leaping to fame in 1999 with the multi-million selling single Turn Around, Jason Hayward - AKA Jason Phats - has been working non-stop with his DJ’ing musical partner Russell Small, and as the duo Phats & Small they’ve recorded and produced remixes for the likes of Jean Michel Jarre, Simply Red and The Lighthouse Family. Alongside his Phats & Small commitments, Jason has also been busy setting up a record label, Mutant Disco, and has taken on the mantle of producer for a variety of forthcoming coming projects.

Hayward’s home studio in Brighton is based around Logic 8, and he’s recently boosted his DAW plug-in arsenal with the purchase of a Universal Audio UAD Nevana system, which provides a full suite of UA’s highly regarded Neve plug-in emulations, including the 1073 & 1081 EQs and the 88RS channel strip. Since acquiring the Nevana Pack, Hayward has expanded his rig to include all of the current UAD plug-in range, and while he names the Fairchild 670 emulation as his favourite, it was the Pultec EQ that he got to grips with first. “It just gives it that glorious American sound, so when you’re working on dance music you can just put it on the bass and drums and it brings everything together - and gives it real warmth. In fact, I have to say the UAD plug-ins are absolutely phenomenal.”

Hayward’s also a convincing advocate of his Røde NT2 microphone. “I’ve had it for six years and use it on every vocal I record, and it’s been used on all three Phats & Small albums. The standout feature for me on the new single is Ben Ofoedu’s vocal; that was recorded with the Røde NT2 and processed through the UAD’s 1176 and Fairchild plug-ins.”

“The NT2 has been fabulous,” concludes Hayward. “I’ve used it on absolutely everything since I bought it. I feel a bit guilty sometimes because I virtually never put it back in its case, but it never lets me down and in six years I’ve never even had it serviced.”

This year looks set to be an exciting one - the new Phats & Small single will be followed up almost immediately by another, and there’s a new top-secret collaborative audio-visual project on his Geek label. Add the work he’s been carrying out with several new artists in various capacities, and it looks like Jason Hayward’s studio will be at the centre of the UK music scene for a while to come...
